The 2013 Gold Star Recipients Announced

TEN TEACHERS TO RECEIVE $1000: GOLD STAR AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING TEACHING

The 2013 Gold Star Awards for Outstanding Teaching, co-sponsored by the R.J. McElroy Trust and KWWL Television, will be awarded to the following ten Black Hawk County teachers:

Renae Beneke, Science Teacher, Peet Junior High School

Michelle Droe, Music Teacher, Lincoln Elementary School – Cedar Falls

Jennifer Gates, Science Teacher, Union High School

Ryan Haynes, Music Teacher, Fred Becker Elementary School

Cristin Marshall, Third grade Teacher, Hansen Elementary School

Tricia Mayer, Math Teacher, Blessed Maria Assunta Pallotta

Ronda Rathe, Second grade Teacher, Dunkerton Elementary School

Nicole Schrage, English Teacher, East High School

Linda Shapiro, English Teacher, Hudson Middle School

Jake Young-Kent, Literacy Teacher/Coach, Carver Academy

These ten award winners were selected from 563 teachers who were nominated by students, parents, and colleagues.  They were chosen to represent the hundreds of teachers who rise above everyday standards to help students achieve their fullest potential.

The program honoring this year’s Gold Star Teachers will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus.  The Gold Star Singers, under the direction of Kari Jo Ruden, will perform.

This is the 25th year of the event.

The public is invited to attend.  Tickets, which are free of charge, are necessary for admission and are available by calling 287-9102.
